It was with great sadness that we learned about the sudden death last week of Professor James Fairley at his home in Belfast. Professor Fairley was a major figure in the mammal world of both Ireland and Britain, due to his research and scientific publications on almost all Irish mammal species, but also by his successful books written for the general public; ‘An Irish Beast Book’ published in 1975 and ‘A basket of weasels’ in 2001.
