Mammals in Ireland

Although the island of Ireland has fewer mammal species than Britain, its nearest neighbour, many of those present are at the northwestern edge of their range. This, and in the absence of related species, has given rise to interesting differences in their ecology and morphology that merit research and conservation.

In Ireland we focus our work on three priority species — the lesser horseshoe bat, Irish stoat and pine marten. We do, however, regularly receive queries about the following eight species.
